REFLEX TESTING

Reflex testing occurs when tests are automatically added to an original order based on an individual analyte(s) value. This process provides relevant, cost effective testing. The following are subject to reflex testing:

CBC (Complete Blood Count with Automated Differential

Manual differential, RBC morphology, etc. added for abnormal CBC parameters

Urinalysis

Microscopic Exam added for abnormal urine chemistries (blood, protein, leukocytes, etc.)

Accuchek (Capillary Whole Blood Glucose

Glucose test performed in main laboratory for any accuchek <50 or >350 mg/dl.

Bacterial Cultures

Gram stains are performed automatically on: sputums, wounds, body fluids and tissues.

Bacterial Cultures

Identification and Susceptibility testing performed when pathogens are isolated.

Urine collected aseptically (bladder tap, catheter) on child <13 years of age

Culture automatically added for child<12 if bladder tap or catheter specimen/

Tissues

Special stains or tissue consults may be added based on pathologic diagnosis.

Breast Tissue Biopsy

All breast tissue with a diagnosis of cancer are referred to the reference laboratory for estrogen and progesterone receptor analysis (ERA/PRA).

Type and Screen

Two Unit Crossmatches for all positive screens

REFLEX TESTING CONT’D:

Cardiac Profile

If CK >20, a CKMB (Immunoassay) is reflexed.

Acetone, Serum

Titer is reflexed on positives.

RPR

MHA-TP to the State for all Reactives.
