Bone Densitometry

This exam is performed to assess your risk for osteoporosis by measuring your bone density. Osteoporosis is the leading cause of most serious fractures to the hip, spine and wrist.

Risk factors for osteoporosis include:

  • caucasion or asian nationality
  • postmenopausal
  • early or surgically induced menopause
  • persons on high doses of thyroid medication
  • high or prolonged doses of cortisone-like drugs for asthma, arthritis, or other diseases
  • person whose diet is low in dairy products and/or other sources of calcium
  • persons physically inactive
  • persons who smoke or drink to excess
  • family history of osteoporosis

Our routine scan for bone densitometry is of the left hip region and lower spine because there are no bones overlying these areas and we are able to get a more accurate reading. Patients are asked to dress comfortably (no metal around the waist). The exam usually takes about 35 minutes. We schedule this exam during the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

We are located in Suite 125 on the first floor of St. Joseph Professional Building.
