Nuclear medicine scans provide information about both the anatomy and the function of organs in the body. When the patient undergoes a nuclear medicine scan, he/she will be given a chemical compound which contains a small amount of radioactive substance. It is most commonly administered either by injection into a vein in the arm, by swallowing a pill, or by inhaling the compound through a breathing device. There are a number of different radioactive compounds used, depending on what part of the body or which organ system is being evaluated. Each test uses a specific compound and method of administration. Side effects or adverse reactions are very rare. The patient will not feel anything from the radioactive substance itself.
Scheduled outpatient procedures are available Monday through Friday. Emergency services are available 24 hours a day. A radiologist is available 7am-6pm Monday through Friday and available "oncall" after hours and on weekends.
