Flu Vaccinations
Many local health care providers continue to receive shipments of flu vaccine throughout November and December. Flu vaccinations may be given throughout flu season, which stretches from November through March. Although St. Joseph works to keep this vaccination information as up to date as possible, the list may not reflect all locations providing flu vaccinations.

A number of organizations are offering flu vaccinations to at-risk patients only. At-risk patients are defined by the Centers For Disease Control as people who are 65 or older, people who suffer from a chronic or long-term disease, women who are pregnant during flu season, and children from 6 to 23 months old.

Flu Vaccination Resources
Your first resource for flu shots should be your family physician. Many family practice physician offices will continue to receive vaccine through November and December. If your doctor’s office does not have vaccinations available and will not be getting additional vaccine, a number of area organizations are offering flu vaccinations.

How to reduce your chances of getting the flu
If you have or have not had a flu vaccination, to reduce the chance of getting the flu:

  • Wash your hands frequently;
  • Cover your cough or sneeze;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth;
  • Avoid close contact with people;
  • Avoid large, crowded public areas; and
  • Stay home if you feel sick.

    Signs and symptoms of the flu
    Flu symptoms will come on very quickly and may include fever, body aches, headache, sore throat, chills/sweats, stuffy nose and fatigue. Fever and body aches are big differences between the flu and other cold and sinus illnesses. Additionally, the flu rarely causes stomach or intestinal problems

    Information on the Avian (or Bird) Flu
    The avian flu should not be confused with the more common seasonal influenza.

    What is avian influenza (bird flu)?
    Bird flu is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Across the world, wild birds carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. Bird flu is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and be fatal.

    How does bird flu spread?
    Infected birds shed flu virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated excretions or surfaces that have been contaminated. It is believed that most cases of bird flu infection in humans have resulted from contact with infected poultry or contaminated surfaces. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely, and transmission has not been observed to continue beyond one person.

    The H5N1 avian influenza virus is not transmitted to humans through properly cooked food. The virus is sensitive to heat. Normal temperatures used for cooking will kill the virus.

    What are the symptoms of bird flu in humans?
    Symptoms of bird flu in humans have ranged from typical flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat and muscle aches) to eye infections, pneumonia, severe respiratory diseases (such as acute respiratory distress), and other severe and life-threatening complications. The symptoms of bird flu may depend on which virus caused the infection.

    How do people become infected?
    Direct contact with infected poultry, or surfaces and objects contaminated by their excrements, is presently considered the main route of human infection.

    Does the virus spread easily from birds to humans?
    No. Though more than 100 human cases have occurred in the current outbreak, this is a small number compared with the huge number of birds affected and the numerous associated opportunities for human exposure, especially in areas where backyard flocks are common. No cases of the Avian flu have yet been reported in the United States.
