![]() | A patient scheduled to have an EEG should arrive for the test with clean, dry hair free of oil, hair spray, and hair clips. The EEG is performed by a trained technologist in the hospital EEG lab. The person sits in a comfortable recliner while the technologist applies metal discs to the scalp with a paste that can later be washed away with shampoo. During the test the technologist may ask the person to breathe deeply for a short time. The technologist may also shine a flashing light in a person's eyes and ask him to open and close his eyes several times. A patient may also be asked to go to sleep during the test. The total time for the test will be about 45 minutes. A person will be able to resume their usual activities after the EEG. Children should be told what to expect during a visit to the EEG lab. Mothers may bring a pacifier or a bottle for infants. Children may bring a doll or stuffed animal to hold during the test. |
