Spiritual Care Volunteer Opportunities
Spiritual Care is an essential dimension to providing holistic care at St. Joseph. As a Catholic Healthcare System, we value the diversity of ways in which faith is expressed and are committed to seeing that the faith, belief and values of our patients and families are honored. Our goal is to be aware of a patient’s spirituality in order to bring comfort and a sense of well- being during their stay, as well as how it influences their health care decisions.
Our Spiritual Care volunteers are able to visit our patients and families to offer emotional and spiritual support to ease the stress of being in the hospital. Volunteers are needed in these areas:
- Care Partners: Are assigned to the ER, Day Surgery, and the Med/Surg Units. These volunteers offer special care and attention to patients and families through their compassion, care and offer of prayer when it is requested.
- Eucharistic Ministers: Visit the Catholic patients throughout the hospital, Rehab Services, St. Joseph Manor and Dubuis to offer communion to our Roman Catholic patients.
- Chaplain Internship: Is a unique opportunity that is available to the community, graduate students and our volunteers who are looking to broaden their understanding of healthcare and how to be at the bedside. It requires 10 hours each week for 10 weeks. Call the Spiritual Care Department to inquire when the next internship is scheduled.
Scheduling is flexible depending on your needs and all volunteers will be trained before they go out on the units on their own. If you feel called to any of these special ministries, please contact Chaplain Mary Clare Carden, Director of Spiritual Care, to schedule an interview. She can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 979.776.4994. Approval by the Spiritual Care Department for these assignments is required before you can begin your volunteer orientation process.
