St Joseph has the largest team of Occupational Therapists in the Brazos Valley. Our Occupational Therapists are patient centered and focus on each patient’s goals. Many of our Occupational Therapists have specialized skill sets in areas such as pediatrics, low-vision, lymphedema, and hand therapy.
St Joseph Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants help people of all ages participate in the things they need to do for everyday activities. Occupational Therapy focuses on improving skills necessary for people’s daily “occupation” or how they “occupy their day”. This includes activities from waking up on time to completing all “routine” activities for daily living, work, and play.
Occupational Therapists work with people who have physical, mental, or developmental conditions. Occupational Therapists use therapeutic activities to increase independent function of work, self-care, and play activities. This may include adaptation of task or environment to achieve maximum independence to enhance the quality of life.
Common occupational therapy interventions include helping people regain skills after an injury, providing supports for adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes, and helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations.
Through the use of therapeutic treatments and specialized equipment, St Joseph Occupational Therapists help patients acquire skills for the job of living, including:
- Promoting independence in daily living skills, including dressing, grooming and feeding
- Improving fine motor and hand/eye coordination skills
- Improving organization, self-regulation, and behavioral state
- Improving visual/motor perceptual skills including writing
- Addressing orthopedic complications
- Helping to increase function through the use of splinting or casting
