Chemotherapy (medical oncology) is a potent weapon in the fight against cancer. It can be used to cure cancer, to slow its growth, keep it from spreading, or even to relieve the symptoms caused by cancer. Recent advances in the knowledge and understanding of the biology in cancer cells has led to a large increase in anti-cancer drugs available to the medical oncologist.
Frequently, a combination of drugs will be used to treat cancer. Each drug is specifically designed to attack one element of the cancer or enhance the body's efforts to fight the disease. Occasionally, Chemotherapy is used in conjunction with Radiation Therapy or Biotherapy as well. Each disease and each individual requires a unique plan that addresses the location of the cancer, the extent of its growth and the general health of the patient.
The physicians and staff of the oncology unit are experts in the care of the cancer patient and understand the complexities of treatment. Guided by St. Joseph's mission and values, they have the knowledge and skills to develop the best plan for each patient and the know-how and experience to deliver it in a supportive and caring way. Our nurses have been specifically trained in the care of the cancer patients and several have received national certification recognizing their extraordinary knowledge and abilities.
