The Unique ENT Needs Of Children
This will come as no surprise to you as a parent, but children have many unique medical needs that differ from those of adults. Their bodies are still growing. Their immune systems aren't very strong yet. They tend to come into contact with lots of germs at school and on the playground. Also, they love to have fun and can be quite accident-prone. The medical needs of children definitely include diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, and throat.
Ear problems are a very common childhood malady. They affect 80% or more of all children. A very common disorder that many children suffer from is otitis media (middle ear inflammation). It affects over 80% of all children before their 3rd birthday. By the time they are 3, 50% of all children suffer 3 or more instances of it. Occurrences of this very common, painful problem are more frequent during cold and flu season.
