St. Joseph Best Bets

It is not easy to understand the best daily dietary choices you should make. We know that applying important nutrition lessons is even more difficult once you get to the supermarket or restaurant. That's why we developed the Best Bets Program!

Best Bets is the innovative program created by St. Joseph Regional Health Center and registered dietitian Linda Kapusniak. This program is designed to help you find the most heart healthy foods at your favorite restaurants and provide you with easy-to-follow tips that can make choosing healthy-nutrient-rich foods at the grocery store a cinch!

Mission Statement

To provide residents of the Brazos Valley essentital dietary strategies for controlling calories, avoiding foods that cause disease and consuming foods that prevent disease, using information that is objective, balanced and science based so that you may live a longer and healthier life

Best Bets at the Restaurant

The National Restaurant Association estimates that the average American eats approximately four to five meals a week outside the home. Hence, eating out is no longer a special occasion, but part of a busy lifestyle and needs to be treated accordingly.

It became evident to registered dietitian Linda Kapusniak that many of the patients being referred by their physician for high cholesterol and obesity were getting a significant amount of fat and calories in their diet from the foods they were choosing at restaurants.

"The Best Bets program was designed to educate diners about the variety of healthy selections available at restaurants in Bryan/College Station and make ordering these items as simple as possible."

To determine which menu items to consider for our Best Bets Restaurant Program, we interviewed the chefs and managers at each participating restaurant. The Best Bet selections are those foods deemed the most heart healthy at that particular restaurant.

Best Bets items can be identified one of three ways in participating restaurants:

  • Placed a heart with the St. Joseph logo on the menu by the item  (Click the heart for an example!)
  • Offer a special St. Joseph Best Bets menu - Restaurant Menu Sample
  • Have a sign board listing the Best Bets items- Restaurant Board Sample
  • Best Bets Restaurant Guide to Low Fat Dining in the Brazos Valley is an alphabetical guide that takes the guess work out of what to order at over 100 Bryan-College Station resturants. The book offers "Best Bet" menu selections and provides you with the skills and strategies you need to make the healthiest menu selections when dining out.

Best Bets at the Grocery Store

Now there is a better way to make decisions about the foods you eat at home. With the help of our Best Bets Grocery Store Program, Best Bets does the nutritional verifications so you don't have to. We have researched the nutrition fact panels, package labels and nutrition reports to find the most heart healthy items at the grocery store.

Best Bets Shelf Tags are a way to guide shoppers in their selections. The SJ heart logo is now being placed on foods with superior nutritional benefit with an adjacent tag telling what the benefit is.

We teamed up with Kroger to provide shoppers with ways to more easily identify the healthiest foods. These are food that research has shown to have the power to cut your chances of developing a number of life threatening diseases.
